Stainless Steel Door Furniture FAQ

Whilst
stainless steel was available before the Second World War, it didn't really
become popular until after this period. This was due to all metals being
protected and being used primarily for the war effort.
Stainless
steel was introduced as a hardwearing, maintenance free, non-corrosive material,
used mainly in commercial applications. It is important to remember when using
stainless steel door furniture that screws of the same grade should be used for
fixing. This prevents any bi-metallic corrosion occurring when two different
metals come into contact.
When
stainless steel door furniture was first introduced, only basic round bar
applications were available. Today there are many up to date modern designs available
in various finishes. These modern day variations and stylish designs bring the benefits of a
maintenance free material that would not look out of place in any home!
Q. Are there different
types of Stainless Steel door furniture?
A. Yes, there are two finish styles available. These are Satin
Stainless Steel (SSS) and Polished Stainless Steel (PSS). They differ in the way
their description implies i.e. one has a matt or satin finish and the other is
polished and looks similar to a chrome plated finish. There are also two grades
of stainless steel generally available, these are known as grade 304 and grade
316. Whilst both grades are suitable for normal use in buildings, 316 is a
better grade formulated for strength and performance together with marine
standard corrosion resistance provided the handle has been manufactured by hot
rolling. Occasionally the design of handles do not allow them to be made this
way and instead the article will go through a casting process. The casting
process can create impurities in the metal and so any furniture made this way is
not recommended for marine use or exposure to harsh weather conditions.
Q. Does the finish on
Stainless Steel furniture need any maintenance?
A. Yes. Natural hazards such as dust and moisture in the air can attack
the finish on this type of furniture. Simple but regular maintenance can prevent
this. Grade 316 is more resistant to corrosive attack than grade 304 making it
ideal for Industrial and Commercial use as well as domestic applications.
Q.
How should I care for my
Stainless Steel furniture?
A. Both polished and satin Stainless Steel should be cleaned regularly
using a mild non-acid soap and hot water. A soft dusting cloth can then be used
to enhance the surface. Occasionally you will need to polish your door furniture
with a non-acid good quality wax polish.
Q. Should I use metal polish
to clean my Stainless Steel door furniture?
A. No. Metal polish should never be used to clean Stainless Steel door
furniture. These polishes contain chemicals that are damaging to the surface of
the metal.
Q. Why haven't I bought any of
this robust, trouble free door furniture?
That's a very good question, why haven't you? If you have any reasons
why you wouldn't buy it please email
with your feedback.
