Handing for Hinges, Locks, Furniture, Door Closers FAQ

Q. How can I work out the handing of ironmongery items?
A. Many items of Ironmongery and Hardware are handed and it is often necessary to identify whether a left hand or right hand variant of an item is required. We hope the descriptions below will help you identify the hand needed when ordering or specifying items. We have divided the different types of handed articles sold by Bernards into headings and each heading refers to the diagram below.

Handing for Hinges

Please note that not all hinges are handed, but for those that are, the following normally describes the hand. Using the above diagram, a door closing in a clockwise direction (5) would use left handed hinges. A door closing in an anti-clockwise direction (6) would use right handed hinges. 

Handing for Door Locks

Using the above diagram, a door closing in a clockwise direction (5) would need a right handed door lock. A door closing in an anti-clockwise direction (6) would need a left handed door lock.

Handing for Bathroom Furniture

Using the above diagram, a door closing in a clockwise direction (5) would use left handed bathroom furniture. A door closing in an anti-clockwise direction (6) would use right handed bathroom furniture.

Handing for Door Closers

Using the above diagram, a door closing in a clockwise direction (5) would need a left hand door closer. A door closing in an anti-clockwise direction (6) would need a right handed door closer.

Handing for Cupboard Locks

Using the above diagram, a door closing in a clockwise direction (5) would need a left hand cupboard lock. A door closing in an anti-clockwise direction (6) would need a right handed cupboard lock.

Handing for Casement (Window) Fasteners

Using the above diagram, a window closing in a clockwise direction (5) would need a right handed casement fastener. A window closing in an anti-clockwise direction (6) would need a left handed casement fastener.
